RCG moment- gender vs. sex

So here's how it went down:
Friday night dinner I'm at the dinner table with a friend and their family. We were making causal conversation, and just talking about life in general. Now, here is when the RCG moment comes in. My friends mom begins to tell me about her day at work. She starts off explaining to me about this woman that she has seen at the office before. She pretty tall, blues eyes, and his mane of long, blonde hair (which the mother believes is a wig). My friends moms proceeds to tell me that she has always sensed something a bit off beat with this woman, but couldn't put her finger on what it was. Now, the lady begins to give her pitch to a room full of people about her flower business. This woman owns a floral store and she is trying to publicize her store. The story goes on about her small business, and that's about it. Now, the mother gets really excited and tells us both, "When this woman was done, and left, one of my friends came up to me and said if I realized anything odd about this particular lady." It is then revealed that the woman, with the believed long blonde wig, is a transvestite. And it made me think, did his mom have a problem with people of this nature, because the word to describe this person was used as 'odd' which was chosen after she discovered her secret.
Now I'm thinking to myself, Wow! Great thing to write down for my blog post, but i felt bad for this 'woman'. It made me think, just because she is a transvestite, what makes her odd?
